Wellington

Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation which strives to provide holistic health care to enhance the health and emotional wellbeing of the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community of Wellington and surrounding districts.
WACHS offers a Primary Health Care Service supported by 2.2 FTE Doctors, a Specilaist Programs Unit incorporating Mental Health, Bringing Them Home, Drug and Alcohol, Family Health, and Men’s Sexual Health Services, a Healthy for Life (H4L) Program, Maternal and Child Health Worker, Aboriginal Health Worker, Youth Health Worker and Dietitian targetting Maternal & Child Health and Chronic Diseases, and a Human Resource / Financial Management section.
WACHS is a not-for-profit organisation that provides specific health and specialist programs to support clients/patients in addressing their health and wellbeing needs and issues in a culturally appropriate way. As well as providing these specific health related services, our service endevours to provide self determination and empower Aboriginal people in the Wellington catchment area to take control and responsibility for their health and well-being.
WACHS is proud to offer the Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program (ANFPP) in the Dubbo and Wellington area. The ANFPP is focused on improving the health and life outcomes of mums and their children, through a home visit program providing support and education.
Improvements in health will be achieved by building the capacity of the mother to empower her to make better choices for her family, which will help close the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. It is expected that as a result of the partnership approach, cultural issues which are a barrier to accessing mainstream programs will be broken down.
WACHS Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program is offered to first time mums of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children. Mums join the program before their 28th week of pregnancy and the Program continues until the child is two years of age. Home visits are provided by a Nurse Home Visitor and Aboriginal Family Partnership Worker. The program is offered to these eligible women who live in the Wellington or Dubbo area and intend to reside there after the baby is born.
